Andreas Scholl

A Grammy nominee, he has won numerous awards and accolades, including the Hesse State Cultural Prize, which he received with his wife, pianist Tamar Halperin, an ECHO Award, a Gramophone Award and an Edison Award.
He was the first countertenor appeared at the prestigious Last Night of the Proms in London. Over the course of a three-decade career, Andreas Scholl has released a series of extraordinary solo recordings: for Decca the album “Wanderer” – in collaboration with Tamar Halperin, and “O Solitude” – an album entirely dedicated to the music of Purcell with the Accademia Bizantina Orchestra, which won the 2012 BBC Music Magazine Award, as well as: “Arias for Senesino, Heroes” – a disc with arias by Handel, Mozart, Hasse and Gluck, “A Musicall Banquet, Arcadia” – a collection of rare and unpublished cantatas by composers from the Roman “Circle of Arcadia”, “Wayfaring Stranger” – a selection of specially arranged English and American folk songs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the cantatas of J.S. Bach with the Kammerorchester Basel and a selection of Antonio Vivaldi’s motets with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.
His extensive discography also includes recordings for Deutsche Grammophon of the Oratoria: G.F. Handel “Solomon” and “Saul”, conducted by Paul McCreesh, and for Harmonia Mundi: Vivaldi’s “Stabat Mater”; Caldara’s “Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo”; and the album “Crystal Tears” with songs by John Dowland.
His DVD releases include productions of Handel’s operas: “Giulio Cesare” (for both Decca and Harmonia Mundi), “Rodelinda” (Warner) and “Partenope” (Decca).
One of the latest productions with the artist’s participation is the album “Small Gifts of Heaven” – a selection of alto arias by J.S. Bach in collaboration with Dorothee Oberlinger and Ensemble 1700, released for Sony.
Andreas Scholl’s latest projects include “The Twilight People” – a recital program in collaboration with Tamar Halperin, performed in prestigious concert halls such as: Concertgebouw, deSingel and Wigmore Hall, recitals with Edin Karamazov from the series “Les Grandes Voix” and collaboration with the Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra and Alexander Rudin.
Andreas Scholl’s most notable operatic roles include Giulio Cesare, in which he made his debut at the Frankfurt Opera and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and at the Salzburger Festspiele in 2012, sharing the stage with the famous Cecilia Bartoli. He has also appeared as Bertarido (“Rodelinda” – Handel), making his debut in this role at both the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and on the stage of The Metropolitan Opera alongside the distinguished singer Renée Flaming.
Andreas Scholl’s concert appearances have included concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Concertgebouworkest, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and all of the world’s leading baroque orchestras. He is a regular guest with numerous chamber ensembles, including Kammerorchester Basel, Zürcher Kammerorchester, Tel Aviv Soloists and the Vienna Morphing Orchestra, with which he worked intensively on the works of Arvo Pärt.
In 2025, he received the prestigious ICMA award in the category of vocal baroque music for the album “Invocazioni mariane” recorded with Accademia Bizantina for naïve.
Born into a family of singers in Eltville on the Rhine, near Wiesbaden, he received his early musical education in the Kiedricher Chorbuben, a choir with a 650-year tradition. He later studied with Richard Levitt and René Jacobs at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Andreas Scholl has been collaborating regularly with the Baroque Collegium 1685 since 2022. He has participated, among others, in an audio/video recorded concert of J.S. Bach’s ” B minor Mass” in the Archcathedral in Przemyśl (Poland).
